Air India has introduced SITA’s OptiFlight and eWAS technologies across its fleet to lower carbon emissions and modernise operations, SITA stated in a press release.

OptiFlight, SITA’s advanced climb optimisation tool, uses historical flight data, aircraft performance models, and 4D weather forecasts to optimise key flight phases. This enables pilots to reduce fuel consumption during take-off and climb – one of the most energy-intensive stages of a journey – without compromising safety.

Meanwhile, SITA’s eWAS solution provides pilots with real-time weather updates and predictive forecasts, helping them avoid turbulence, improve routing, and make more informed in-flight decisions.

The technology is already operational across Air India’s Airbus A320 and Air India Express Boeing 737 fleets, covering both domestic and international services.

Deployment on the airline’s widebody aircraft is also planned. Air India estimates that the solutions will reduce its carbon emissions by 35,000 tonnes annually once fully rolled out.

Basil Kwauk, Chief Operations Officer at Air India, said: ‘Sustainability and efficiency are core to our transformation into a world-class airline. With SITA OptiFlight and SITA eWAS, we’re taking meaningful steps to modernise our operations and reduce our carbon footprint.’

Sumesh Patel, President for Asia Pacific at SITA, added: ‘As the aviation industry navigates growing regulatory and environmental pressure, the need for intelligent, predictive solutions has never been more critical. Air India’s deployment of SITA OptiFlight and eWAS is a strong example of how smart digital technologies can cut emissions, save fuel, and unlock real operational value across every flight.’

Founded in 1932, Air India is the flag carrier of India and a member of the Tata Group. Operating one of the largest domestic and international networks in the country, the airline is currently undergoing a wide-scale transformation programme aimed at modernising its fleet, improving service quality, and strengthening sustainability initiatives.

SITA is a global technology company offering IT and communication solutions for the air transport industry. It helps airlines, airports, and governments improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability through innovative tools and services.
