Brazil achieved a new milestone in renewable energy production in 2023 and generated an unprecedented average of 3,218 average megawatts (MW) from biomass, according to an announcement by the country’s Ministry of Mines and Energy on February 28.
Minister Alexander Silveira of the Ministry of Mines and Energy highlighted that renewable energy sources accounted for 93.6% of Brazil’s total electricity output in 2023, marking a significant achievement in the country’s energy sector.
Brazil additionally expanded electricity output by a record 10,300 MW last year, with new wind farms generating over 47% of the growth in output.
Already recognised as a major player in sustainability, Brazil has signed on to an international agreement to triple renewable energy globally by 2030 and shift away from the use of coal.
The Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), the world’s largest financial coalition dedicated to climate action, earlier announced that it would partner with the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) in order to bolster funding for clean energy projects and environmental restoration initiatives, including the reforestation of the Amazon Rainforest.
