Ferrari has revealed the technology behind its highly anticipated first electric vehicle, the Elettrica, Reuters reported.

At a private event at its Maranello headquarters, Ferrari unveiled the Elettrica’s production-ready chassis. They showed the car’s base with a battery pack and electric motor, missing wheels and an outer shell. This marks a significant step towards the launch of a completed car, which Ferrari plans to debut globally next year.

The Elettrica will reach a top speed of 310 km/h (193 mph), slightly slower than Ferrari’s petrol-engine models. Nevertheless, it will offer an impressive range of at least 530 km. Designed as a four-door, four-plus seat vehicle, the Elettrica will feature a unique sound system that amplifies vibrations from the powertrain, delivering an authentic electric Ferrari sound, rather than mimicking engine noise.

Benedetto Vigna, Ferrari’s CEO, described the event as ‘a historic day’ and emphasised that the electric vehicle will complement, not replace, the company’s existing models. ‘The EV is an addition, not a transition,’ he stated.

Ferrari plans for 20% of its model range to be fully electric by 2030, a lower target than the 40% previously outlined in its 2020 business plan. Ferrari has a more cautious approach compared to other brands, such as Porsche, which has actively pursued EVs but faced challenges in balancing consumer preferences for both electric and combustion-engine models.

Design and Competition

The Ferrari Elettrica will feature a chassis and body made of 75% recycled aluminium, with the battery integrated into the floor to lower the car’s centre of gravity. Additionally, the Elettrica will offer fast-charging capabilities, further boosting its appeal to luxury electric car buyers.

Ferrari’s challenge is to create a car that goes beyond a high-performance EV. This segment is already dominated by models like the Tesla Roadster, which boasts a top speed of over 400 km/h (250 mph).

The Elettrica’s Price and Market Position

The Ferrari Elettrica is expected to cost at least 500,000 euros ($580,400), continuing the brand’s reputation for exclusivity. Industry experts note that Ferrari’s strength lies in its ability to deliver the same driving experience and emotional connection its customers enjoy with its combustion-engine models.

As Ferrari prepares for the launch of the Elettrica, it faces the challenge of creating a car that combines the best of both worlds: cutting-edge electric technology and the iconic Ferrari driving experience.
