In a strategic move to expand its presence in Africa, the global air-conditioning manufacturer Midea is opening its first Proshop on the continent, located in Abuja, Nigeria, according to a press release.

Timed to coincide with the Proshop’s debut, Midea also introduced its UNICOOL+ series. It is a new line of smart inverter air conditioners engineered specifically for African energy conditions and climates. Designed with features like voltage surge protection, reinforced circuit boards, and rapid cooling capabilities, UNICOOL+ addresses one of the region’s key infrastructure challenges: unstable power supply.

The launch event also marked the formalisation of a partnership between Midea and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Through this collaboration, Midea is introducing a skills training initiative aimed at equipping local technicians in Nigeria with professional education in air conditioning installation and maintenance.

The Abuja Proshop itself represents a hybrid retail model, offering not only direct sales but also tailored consultations and after-sales support. It is designed to serve both individual consumers and contractors managing large-scale infrastructure, improving accessibility to high-performance cooling solutions and elevating service standards in the process.

Certified graduates of the programme are expected to elevate service standards across the country while gaining access to greater employment opportunities in the growing sector.

Sharon Dimanche, Chief of Mission at IOM Nigeria, underscored the importance of private-sector engagement in community development, stating that Midea’s investment demonstrates how businesses can drive humanitarian impact through innovation and inclusive growth.

As demand for climate control solutions rises in Africa, driven by urbanisation, increasing temperatures, and a growing middle class, Midea’s long-term commitment to the continent is becoming increasingly evident.
