Google has released a major update to Chrome, integrating its Gemini AI to improve browsing, the company stated in a press release.

The update is initially available for Mac and Windows desktop users in the U.S., with plans to extend to mobile devices soon. The aim is to enhance browsing by using AI to make it more efficient, safer, and user-friendly.

A key feature of Gemini AI is its ability to help users understand complex content on webpages. By asking questions, users can get summaries or explanations of difficult material, which could be useful for articles, reports, or technical content.

Gemini can also work across multiple tabs, enabling users to consolidate information from different sources, such as combining details about flights, hotels, and activities while planning a trip.

Another feature being introduced is AI-powered search from Chrome’s omnibox. This allows users to perform detailed searches, ask follow-up questions, and receive AI-generated responses directly from the address bar, without leaving the page.

In the coming months, Gemini AI will introduce ‘agentic’ capabilities, which will automate tasks such as booking appointments or ordering groceries. Users will be able to delegate these tasks to the AI, while retaining the ability to pause or stop them at any time.

Security is also a focus of this update. The introduction of Gemini Nano, a lightweight AI model, aims to help identify and block common online threats, including tech support scams and phishing attempts.

Chrome’s password manager is getting an upgrade, allowing users to change compromised passwords with a single click for supported websites, improving convenience and security.

These updates are part of Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance Chrome’s functionality with AI, aiming to improve user experience and maintain its competitive edge in the browser market.
