Italy has launched a new visa for digital nomads. Effective as of April 4, digital nomads, employees or self-employed individuals who choose to work from various locations can pack their summer wear and legally work and reside in the sunny Mediterranean country. The minimum income required to qualify individuals for the digital nomad visa is just under €28,000.

For those able to afford a more glamorous gateway, Italy has a non-domiciled regime: a flat tax of  €100,000 annually for new residents. Family members can be added for an extra €25,000.

With endless historic sights, delicious cuisine, and scenic nature, Italy is set to become a top destination for the internationally-minded. Nearly 7,000 Americans moved to Italy in 2023. Italy also happens to be one of the global top international residential markets.

Italy can satisfy all tastes and preferences. Here are the top 3 regions in Italy for digital nomads and non-doms alike.

  • Umbria

Right in the center of Italy, near the country’s capital, is a region called Umbria, known as the “Green Heart” of Italy. This relatively under-the-radar, breathtaking, and elegant region offers a captivating blend of ancient and medieval history, local cuisine and outdoor activity. Its picturesque medieval towns, such as Assisi and Perugia, provide a serene backdrop for remote work in summer or winter. Its central location within Italy also grants easy access to major cities like Rome and Florence, as well as pristine natural attractions like Lake Trasimeno, offering ample opportunities for weekend getaways and cultural immersion. In Umbria, you’ll find yourself steeped in heritage, while also being able to take advantage of the region’s cosmopolitan nature through world class events like the Umbria Jazz Festival or golf tournaments at awarded clubs like Antognolla Golf.

    • Lombardy

For those who enjoy a quicker pace, Lombardy is home to Italy’s economic powerhouse and to vibrant cities like Milan and Bergamo. Renowned for its innovative spirit and dynamic business ecosystem, Lombardy offers abundant coworking spaces, high-speed internet, and a plethora of networking opportunities for remote professionals. Make yourself feel like a celebrity by attending Milan Fashion Week or dining at Enrico Bartolini al Mudec. Whether it’s exploring historical landmarks, indulging in world-class cuisine, or tapping into the region’s entrepreneurial energy, Lombardy provides an enriching experience for digital nomads seeking both professional growth and cultural immersion.

      • Campania

Campania, with its enchanting blend of ancient history and stunning coastline offers a captivating setting for digital nomads. Boasting cities like Naples, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast, this region provides a rich cultural experience, while its affordable cost of living makes it appealing for remote workers. Campania is characterised by its more laid-back lifestyle which leaves room for thinking and creativity. Make sure to visit the sandy Maronti beach and to have an espresso at the classic Caffé Sospeso. Campania calls digital nomads to immerse themselves in its timeless beauty, fostering a rare work-life balance. Just be careful to not get too relaxed!
