Olímpica S.A., a major supermarket chain in Colombia, has become the first retailer in Latin America to implement the full ELERA Security Suite, developed by Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, Toshiba stated in a press release.
The rollout, which also includes Toshiba’s self-checkout systems, is part of a broader effort to modernise store operations while improving efficiency and security.
The new technology leverages AI-powered image recognition and behavioural detection to reduce scanning errors and help identify potential losses at self-checkout stations. These tools are designed to optimise customer flow and reduce the need for manual interventions by store staff, contributing to faster and more streamlined checkout processes.
‘Retailers today must balance efficiency with innovation to meet evolving consumer expectations’, said Manuel Medecigo, Vice President of Sales at Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions. ‘Olímpica S.A. needed a solution that reduced wait times and modernised its image while seamlessly integrating with its existing infrastructure.’
According to Omar Villamil, IT Manager at Olímpica S.A., ‘With Toshiba’s self-checkout systems, we aim to enrich our customers’ shopping experience by offering modern and efficient payment alternatives, including cash, cards, or electronic methods like QR codes.’
The systems have been integrated with Olímpica’s existing infrastructure across multiple stores in Colombia. Customers can now use a variety of payment options, and the technology complements traditional checkout lanes, rather than replacing them entirely.
The project is supported by Toshiba’s local partner, Redsis y Sistemas Integrados, which provides integration and technical assistance adapted to the Colombian market. Toshiba maintains a dedicated local engineering and service team to ensure ongoing support.
Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions views the project as part of a wider trend in Latin America, where retailers are adopting AI-based solutions to address common challenges such as long queues, operational inefficiencies, and security concerns.
Olímpica S.A., founded in 1953 in Barranquilla, is one of Colombia’s largest retail chains. Part of Grupo Olímpica, it operates hundreds of supermarkets and pharmacies across the country.
