Welcome to the Plastics Weekly, NEO’s regular news monitoring of the plastics industry.
This week’s highlights:
- As the world’s top producer of both bamboo and plastic waste, China is transforming its bamboo industry – from simple products such as bamboo fences to technology-driven ones like the biodegradable products that Ye makes – as the nation works to curb plastic consumption. Anji county, a tourism destination with abundant bamboo, is considered a model example of President Xi’s environmental vision in action. (South China Morning Post)
- Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli ha introduced a new logo that signals sustainable materials. Pirelli created a bespoke logo to identify tires that contain at least 50% materials of bio-based and recycled origin. The new marking – which depicts two arrows in a circle and will be adopted on new products – underlines Pirelli’s commitment to the environment, the company said. This new logo is also designed as a clear indication for customers, allowing them to choose more sustainable tires. (Tire Review)
- Can plastic-eating bacteria save us from the plastic crisis? Some scientists think the technology will remain limited. Even so, what most scientists are working towards is a world in which enzymes are set to work turning old plastic into new plastic. (The Guardian)
