Singapore’s StarHub has completed Southeast Asia’s first trial of a 5G cloud radio access network (RAN), in collaboration with Nokia and Dell Technologies, marking a step forward in next-gen connectivity, TNGlobal reported.

Aligning with StarHub’s Cloud Infinity programme, the trial aims to accelerate digital transformation. The cloud-native platform RAN will support new enterprise services and pave the way for advanced 5G and future 6G capabilities.

Starhub’s cloud RAN will support advanced use cases like time-sensitive services, ultra-low-latency applications, and dynamically adjustable throughput. This capability positions the company to meet evolving enterprise demands and tap into new revenue opportunities.

Nokia’s 5G cloud RAN, compatible with major cloud and server platforms, was used in the trial to place a carrier-grade call – matching the performance of traditional RANs. The company’s MantaRay NM system enabled smooth integration between the cloud RAN and purpose-built RAN networks.

Dell provided the hardware for the trial, using its PowerEdge XR8620 servers. StarHub also utilised Red Hat OpenShift – an industry-leading hybrid cloud application platform powered by Kubernetes – to support cloud-native RAN functions across the network.

‘StarHub is committed to delivering high-performing network and innovative services to our customers’, said Ayush Sharma, Chief Technology Officer at StarHub.

‘This partnership will enhance our network’s performance, efficiency, and resilience, while future-proofing it for emerging technologies. It also marks a key step in our Cloud Infinity journey, strengthening our ability to deliver cloud-native services and drive the future of connectivity’, he added.

StarHub is a leading Singaporean telecommunications company that offers a comprehensive range of services, including mobile, broadband, fixed voice, and pay television, to both consumer and corporate markets. Founded in 1998, StarHub has developed extensive fibre and wireless infrastructure, enabling it to deliver high-quality communication, entertainment, and digital solutions.

StarHub’s Cloud Infinity programme is positioned to help organisations address the increasing demand for sovereign cloud services in Southeast Asia, especially among government agencies and highly regulated sectors. Features like enhanced encryption and quantum-safe technologies are being integrated to support the specific requirements of those sectors.
